What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the practice of establishing a calm and relaxed, sleep-like state with the help of medication. It is an ideal solution for patients with a real fear or anxiety that prevents them from getting their needed dental. It is also appropriate for patients with a low pain threshold, children who can't sit still in the dentist's chair, individuals with very sensitive teeth, patients with a bad gag reflex, and those undergoing lengthy, complex procedures.

Sedation has been shown to be safe when administered by a trained dentist. Before the procedure, we will ask you about any health conditions or current medications. Our well-trained team will monitor your vital signs during treatment to ensure your safety, comfort, and well-being.

What Are the Types of Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used type of dental sedation. This minimal form of sedation involves breathing laughing gas combined with oxygen through a mask to induce a state of calm and relaxation. We will use a local anesthetic in combination with laughing gas to ensure the procedure is free of pain. Nitrous oxide wears off soon after removing the mask, allowing you to drive yourself home after treatment.

Oral Sedation

This form of conscious sedation ranges from minimal to moderate, depending on the dose you receive. You will typically take a pill to take about an hour before the procedure. You will begin to feel drowsy and relaxed, but you will remain awake throughout your treatment. Oral sedation works well to relax patients with a high level of anxiety.

Most people remember very little or nothing about the procedure. The sedative will leave you feeling a little groggy, but will completely wear off by the next day. You'll need a ride home, so make plans with a friend or a family member in advance.
